Gadgets and Electronics 2007 Review – From Chinavasion

Well, the fat lady sang for 2007 not so long ago, bringing down the curtain on what may have been the year of digital music. It was also a year filled with sweet music for Chinavasion, with the company enjoying immense growth thanks to a surge of demand for Chinese wholesale electronics from both traditional wholesale importers and international eBay dropshippers.

An incredible number of MP3s and MP3 capable phones went on the market last year with the iPod  grabbing headlines along with its cellular sibling, the iPhone. However, there was no shortage of MP3-capable phones on the market with most of the major players offering some sort of MP3-orientated phone. MP3s appeared everywhere, were coupled with almost everything and continued to be one of Chinavasion’s strongest selling wholesale categories. However, it was  MP4 Players which sold the most units and created the biggest buzz in 2007.

The MP4 market is one that is rapidly growing throughout Asia, especially as long commutes and extended work days mean consumers cannot often catch up with their favorite movies and television shows at home. It is perhaps for this reason the biggest seller in Chinavasion by volume was a watch MP4 player. A news release about the first ever MP4 watch was hinted at in 2006 by none other than Engadget before being launched in February. Its James Bond feel coupled with fantastic functionability made it the item to have for many people.

While the device came with normal wire headphones it didn’t take long for similar watches with Bluetooth capable earphones to arrive on the market:

Demand for MP4s, MP3’s and MP3 capable devices created a massive  flash disk shortage in the middle of the year. In first two weeks of August the global supply of flash memory virtually disappeared pushing up prices by almost 9% in some cases. Various reasons have been given for the shortage, and subsequent price rise, including a fire at the factory which produces 45% of flash memory chips and high demand for Apple’s Iphone (which chewed up 4GB memory per unit). One Taiwan commentator estimated that the iPhone was using up to 25% of the world’s flash memory supplies at the time.

There were also developments in the world of digital music production and the protection of copyright by music companies. The companies continued their pursuit of people in the file sharing community, with one going as far as charging an Arizona cab driver who claims he uploaded music from CDs only for his own use. Many artists took a different view, however, with Radiohead putting all of its new album ‘In Rainbows‘ online, Nine Inch Nails following suit with the unusually titled ‘The Inevitable Rise And Fall Of Niggy Tardust’ . The former album flourished while the latter album floundered.

Prices for LCD screens dropped sharply, with buyers being able to get much cheaper, larger screens for car DVD players, car monitors and home monitors as a result.

The MP4 watch wasn’t the only popular seller at Chinavasion. Hand held breath alcohol testers were also in hot demand. We can’t be certain why!

Perhaps a tougher global stance on drinking and driving was responsible, or perhaps they became really popular at office parties… but orders were high regardless of the reason.

More and more businesses and individuals entered the China import market during 2007 and this trend will continue to boost Chinavasion’s popularity. The company quadrupled its office space and staff numbers in 2007. The company also became an official Bluetooth Special Interest Group Adopter so the future looks brighter than ever!

Everybody here at Chinavasion would like to thank you all for your continued support and we look forward to helping you profit from China Electronics in the upcoming year.
