When thinking about Google the first things that come to mind are the search engine, Android, and Gmail. Although Google is one of the largest internet giants in the world this immensely successful company so far never succeeded in developing a chat application that became popular among the masses. If it’s up to Google, however, this will change with the launch of their latest Application; ‘Allo’.

The launch of yet another chat application by a gigantic internet company might come as a surprise to some as the market for chat–apps already seems to be pretty saturated. There are plenty of different chat-apps available and the battle for  ‘’most popular chat app’’ seems to be long decided. Whereas in the Western world WhatsApp has won this battle Facebook messenger stays a popular alternative. iMessage stays popular among Apple users and Wechat has an immense number of users in Asia. This makes one wonder, is there really a need for yet another application through which you can chat and stay in contact with your friends?

If it’s up to Google the answer to this question is certainly yes. With the launch of Allo the company wants to enter and penetrate the chat-app industry with a smart application that, besides functioning as a chat platform, will make your daily life a lot more efficient and convenient. This is why Google has integrated its new technology  “Google Assistant”  into its chat application through which Google hopes to become your own, virtual, secretary.

What really sets Allo apart is that, through this application, Google is actually able of joining the conversation between you and your friend, providing advice or suggesting smart answers that take away the need to type. For instance, when your friend sends you a picture of her graduation ceremony Allo will automatically suggest you to reply “congratulations” as Google’s smart software recognizes what happens on the picture based upon which it suggests the most suitable reply.

As another example of Google’s Assistant software, Allo is capable of analyzing and understanding the chat topic between you and your friends. This means that, if your friend for instance suggests having Chinese food for dinner, Google will automatically react and use its search engine to show the most popular Chinese restaurants in the area that it would like to suggest to you. Taking it even further, it even allows you to book a table at a certain time at the suggested restaurants right there in the chat application.

Now, all these new “smart” features might sound interesting, however, also make one wonder about privacy issues. These concerns are not totally ungrounded as Google claims it needs to collect and store massive amounts of user-data to increase the efficiency and intelligence of their smart assistant software. At the same time, Google promises not to share any data with external parties. Furthermore, the Allo chat-app gives you the possibility to its users to go into incognito-modus in which case the chat-app makes use of end-to-end encryption making the cat completely anonymous and safe.

Hopefully, Google’s new chat application will become more popular than its previously launched “Google Hangouts” which has been considered as quite the punching bag in the mobile chat industry and never got anywhere close to the same amount as users as its competitors. At the moment Messenger has almost a billion users, WhatsApp has well over a billion users, and Wechat has tons of users in Asia. Google obviously lays way behind in this industry and, in order for Allo to take off, they will need all the users they can get that are interested in Google analyzing their every word and making in-chat suggestions based upon their personal conversations.
