The Great Clash: iOS 10 versus Android 7.0

In two of our previous blogs concerning the upcoming features represented in the new Android 7.0 Nougat and Apple’s OS 10 we discussed the features that both Operating Systems have to offer which, to us, stood out the most. This has provided us at Chinavasion with a good idea of what the next generation of smartphone software from Apple and Google will look like. The question is, however, which one of the two is shaping up to become the more exciting and forward-thinking Operating System.

It is no surprise that, also this time, Apple and Google have taken a slightly different approach towards solving similar problems. Yet, even though their approaches may differ, there are a number of areas in which the two upcoming operating systems can be compared.

Interface:

Whereas Apple has been focusing more upon developing their 3D touch technology along with several other features such as  ‘’raise to wake’’,  Android has chosen to focus more on the importance of multitasking.

Although Apple’s ‘’raise to wake’’ function is a nice little feature it fails to fully impress as Android systems have previously had similar smart motion features that, inter alia, activate your phone while being raised. The new ‘’raise to wake’’ feature in iOS 10 might be useful, however, not entirely new to the industry. Apple’s further developed 3D touch features did, however, leave a positive impression as it brings along serious advantages that can well enhance your overall user experience.

With Android 7 Google is trying to further stimulate multi-tasking through its updated split-screen features and the possibility to jump back instantly to your previously used application. Two nice features which are guaranteed to enhance the user experience of Android users significantly as it makes multitasking a whole lot easier and less time consuming.

Notifications:

With respect to the notification received on your smartphone both the new iOS and Android system went through some drastic changes.

With its deeply involved 3D Touch, Apple gives you the possibility to expand your notifications and initiate quick responses along with other features by a simple touch of your screen.  Overall the notification system of Apple has been simplified a lot and the traditional ”slide to unlock” bar has been removed.

Android’s new notification system on the other hand now provides more information and furthermore lets you navigate easier and quicker between your favorite settings toggles which are now customizable. Additionally, Google has provided the option to stack notifications from the same applications, providing you with an easier and more sorted way to organize your notifications.

Messaging:

The most fundamental changes in both the new Android and Apple operating systems alike were probably made within their messaging systems. At the moment WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat are dominating the smartphone messaging industry. Neither Google nor Facebook is happy about being left out, and this shows in the updates in both iOS 10 and Android Nougat.

With iOS 10 Apple massively enhanced its iMessage feature and, when looking at the developments, it is clear that they kept their rivals in mind while implementing their updates. With iOS 10 you will be able to plaster your message threats with different kinds of icons and animations. Additionally, emojis will play a significantly bigger role and you will even be able to leave handwritten messages.

Google’s approach towards messaging in Android Nougat may, at first sight, be less showy; however, it may potentially be even more game-changing in the long run. Along with the launch of Android 7.0, Google is launching an entirely new messaging app called Allo. This application will be incorporated with Google’s search engine technology. This means that, as Allo develops further, you will be able to conduct Google searches, make restaurant reservations, and do a whole lot more from within the App itself. Thanks to Google’s self-learning technology Allo has furthermore been programmed to learn from your chat history and places visited in the past, based upon which Allo is capable to suggest the best reply.

Verdict:

Although the topics covered above are but the mere tip of the iceberg it does clearly show that both Google and Apple take different approaches to improve their operating systems. As for now we won’t know which one of the new Operating Systems will be more complete and forward-thinking as both still need to be launched. At Chinavasion we are eagerly waiting to get our hands on the final software.
