Safety Tips to Keep In Mind While Playing Pokémon GO

The world over has been gripped with Pokémon fever once more, this time by marrying the ‘gotta catch ’em all’ hook of the games with the joy of traveling to new places to find new critters while meeting new people to play with.

A couple of disturbing stories have, however, emerged in the news. While the vast majority of players don’t get into trouble, trouble is inevitable considering that most Pokémon GO players have little to no experience with augmented reality gaming.

This presents a couple of challenges, which can easily be resolved with a few safety measures taken into consideration:

Inform Others. While it can be tempting to freely wander around in search of Pokémon, it is much better if you let other people know where you are. Tell your family and/or friends where you plan to hunt. If you can’t resist being spontaneous on your hunts, use apps that let friends and family track your location.

Critters

Buddy Up. Avoid going to unknown places on your own. Going with one or two other people significantly reduces the chance that you get targeted by crooks. They’ll also be there to help you if you figure into some sort of trouble – and vice-versa. The more people you have with you, the better and safer it will be for all.

Be Courteous. Treating others like decent human beings goes a long way to avoiding conflict. Whether you’re dealing with an irate homeowner who’s tired of Pokémon trainers trooping across their street or dueling against someone from a rival faction, stay humble and be as respectful as you can be.

Survey The Area. Before you hold up your phone to capture wandering Pokémon, put it down and take a long, hard look at your surroundings. Be wary of people that are looking at you a little too intensely. Stay away from darkly lit areas where someone can mug you without anyone noticing. Look around for hazards such as cliffs, potholes, ravines, broken glass, and the like. Identify the hazards beforehand, and you will be less likely to figure into disaster.

Respect Boundaries. Just because there’s a Pokémon you want doesn’t mean you should trespass or desecrate culturally and historically significant locations. Not only will you piss off a lot of people with your disrespect, but you could literally end up in prison if you wander without regard for boundaries. A good rule of thumb: if you see fences blocking your way, chances are you’re not supposed to go through them.

Stop, Then Search. Only hunt for Pokémon when you’re stationary and in a safe place. Never move around without your full attention being devoted to your surroundings. Stop driving. Get off your bike. Stay still. Only then should you whip out your phone and hold it up to hunt for Pokémon.

Save Some Juice. Pokémon GO is notorious for how quickly it saps your smartphone’s battery. It is for this reason that you need to keep a careful eye on how much power is remaining. You really don’t want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere without the ability to call others for help. Packing a power bank or slapping on a battery case is a good idea.
