How To Prevent Overheating

Summer is coming – and for most of us, it’s a cause for joy. Camping, trips to the beach and cut-off shorts – whatever summer is for you, we are sure it is something positive and fun-inspiring. Unfortunately, it may not be exactly the same for your phone. For your smartphone, summer time is fraught with danger of being splashed, left behind on the campsite or overheating. And while there is very little we can do to prevent the first two, the last problem in the list – overheating – can be easily avoided if you follow the necessary precautions, which have helpfully listed here.

Before we get down to the tips, though, let’s see why overheating is dangerous for your smartphone in the first place.

Overheating, even when light, takes a great toll on your battery – so you may notice extreme battery drain in the sunlight. With high temperatures, your central processing unit may be prone to melting and it should not come as a shock if your phone shuts down suddenly. None of this is pleasant, so we head right on to avoiding these issues.

Rule #1: No Tanning For Your Phone

Do not leave your phone in direct sunlight. If this is the one thing you can avoid – do that. Your phone easily catches sunlight – and while for you  sun rays mean fewer tan lines and great skin tone, your phone will store the heat from the sun inside. The longer you leave your phone out in the sun, the hotter it will get – and that’s the direct path to overheating.

Rule #2: Do Not Overdo It With The Brightness

We all know how annoying it can get to use your phone in the sun. The screen looks dark and it’s hard to keep yourself from turning up the brightness all the way up to stop squinting and using your hand as a sun block. However, we strongly suggest you avoid doing that – as that will lead to making your phone even hotter – and not in the good way. So, instead of “brightening it up” – consider getting a glare screen – which will let you enjoy all the benefits of your phone’s large screen.

Rule #3: Slow Down

When you have to use your phone in hot weather or bright sun, try to give it more rest than usual. If there any apps that you are jot using – do not just let them sit in the background – close the up. If you do not plan to use your phone for some time – consider putting it into the flight mode. You will still be able to listen to music and use some of your apps, but your phone will gain a lot by not being overworked.

Rule #4: Limit Gaming and Online Browsing

Yes, we know that these two may be your favourite smartphone functions – but they are also the ones using the most juice. Whereas surfing the web may be hard to cut down on, it’s quite realistic to get involved in less gaming – at least while you are in the hot sun.

Rule #5: Do Not Leave Your Phone (Or Your Dog) In The Car

This is the general hot-weather rule. Do not leave anything that can overheat (and that includes gadgets, animals and people) in a closed vehicle. The environment inside a closed space like this will get oven-like within minutes – so make sure none of your electronics are left behind.

Rule #6 : Get Naked

If you can feel that your phone is already overheating – get rid of the case. No matter how light your case is, when the phone starts getting hotter – any kind of casing just exacerbates the situation. So if it’s getting hot, take off the case and try to put your phone in a cooler shadowy place.

Rule #7: Just Turn It Off

Yep, this is a no-brainer. But when it comes to personal electronics, the preference of “safe” over “sorry” seems to work best. If you feel like the outside temperature is getting way too hot and there will be no chances of finding a cool dark place for your phone – just turn it off. It will give you the peace of mind and your phone a chance to get some much-needed rest.

Luckily, it has never happened to me. Great tips. The brightness on my phone is never on the maximum, it also saves battery and never leave phone in direct sunlight, of course! 🙂

I never thought not to leave it in the car. It makes sense it would get too hot. Thanks

Definitely leaving it on the dashboard of your car at the height of a Summer Day isn’t a good thing. Forgot it was outside during an overnight heavy rainstorm… Having it close when BBQing? Not me, but I’ve seen these mishaps take place. The BBQ one was great. ‘Mysteriously’ bumped onto the grill and the lid was closed without noticing iPhone was there Discovered upon the next checking of the steaks. The cook should had not been quaffing so abundantly that afternoon…

How about over charging the phone/tablet, does it also cause over heating? Rule # 4 is really hard for me to cut down. I’m online 24/7! Great tips though.
