5G Researchers Achieve Speeds of One Terabit Per Second

It appears that once again the UK is leading the way in next generation mobile communications research. Only this time it’s 5G that’s been tested and not the 4G we reported on back in December 2014.

The BBC News site has reported on the University of Surrey’s progress at the 5G Innovation Center known as 5GIC, where they were able to achieve a remarkable speed of one terabit per second (Tbps) in lab conditions when sending data over a distance of 100 meters.

This sort of speeds would allow a file 100 times the size of a feature film to be downloaded in about 3 seconds, which is considerably faster than anything 4G has achieved. However, before you get too excited the Ofcom regulatory body doesn’t think 5G will be available until 2020 at the earliest and it’s still yet to be proven what speeds could be sustained outside of lab conditions in real world environments.

None the less this does mark great progress and shows that mobile communication is capable of great leaps that will undoubtedly revolutionize the way we communicate in the future. For now though the fastest cellular data connection for your phone are on 4G networks which offer average download speeds in the double digits of Megabits per second (Mbps).

If you’re not yet using the 4G network you can get a 4G ready phone from Chinavasion at great wholesale prices starting at about $100. Be sure to check out your SIM provider for compatibility but most of our phones work on the US and UK networks as well as those used in other regions around the globe.
