Updates available

Nobody likes a nag…And you may be discouraged by applications constantly asking you to approve updates at all times of day. Are updates as important as certain apps are trying to make us believe? In most cases, yes – and developers have your best interests in mind when they introduce newer versions of your familiar applications. Here are just a few reasons why it’s a good idea to have all your updates in place.

Stability

With the quick user-to-developer feedback available today, most creators use updates to fix the problem spots that have been reported by application users. Thus, but getting an update, you may also be getting rid of a number of issues that the older version of the application used to have.

Performance

Bigger updates almost always include a jump in efficiency, as well as a set of new features or new interface elements. For instance, you may get a faster operational speed, better in-app environment, improved design  – you get the picture. And as performance improvement is one of the main reasons updates happen in the first place – you may take that as a given.

Security

One of the other key things the developers are trying to make better with every version is security. With every update, your application may get more and more resistant to malware and break-ins, which is especially useful for applications storing or having access to your personal data.

So, we have established that updates are good. And now let’s take a look at how to manage them. It all depends on the level of automation you are looking for. If you want to wash your hands off the matter and not bother approving the suggested updates – that can be done. And if you want to have a more manual approach to the task and handle things personally – that can be arranged as well. It all depends on how much control you have over the process.

Luckily, Google Play Store allows you to make a few settings changes to fit every scenario and leave you with the most convenient arrangement.

If you feel like going automatic, head over to Google Play Store app on your and tap on Settings. Find the “Auto Update Apps” tab and tap on it. You will have to make a few choices here: allow app updates when there is Wi-Fi enabled only, update over any connection or turn off the feature completely. Surely, it would be recommended that you go with the first option (update over Wi-Fi), as updating over any connection can bring up extensive costs.

Allowing automatic updates will free you from manually granting approval – but only for apps that do not ask for additional permissions. If an update will come with some permission requirements, you will still have to go through the trouble of approving it manually.

If you choose to go with having more control over the updates and read what exactly you are getting before the update is enabled – you will need to pay another visit to Google Play Store app. You will follow the already familiar path to Settings>Auto Update Apps – but this time, you will go with “never auto update apps”. Once this option is enabled, you will be notified every time an update for one of your applications is ready. Opening the application will take you to the app’s Play Store page and you will be able to take your time understanding the new updates and what changes they will bring about – and then make an informed decision on whether you want them or not.
