We all have old phones, probably even smartphones, that are left behind as we embark on the quest for sleeker designs, advanced features and larger screens. You may or may not have developed an emotional connection to your outdated phone, but what you’ll surely want to do is find some good use for it. And if selling or exchanging it is not an option – why let it sadly dust in the corner?

With these few simple steps, your old and forgotten phone can regain its dignity by becoming an independent media device.

Step One: Get Rid Of The Past

When you are thinking about completely reinventing your phone – it’s better to start from scratch. Your old smartphone may be full of heavy applications, contacts, saved messages, pictures and lots of other memory-consuming content that you no longer need. So the first thing you should do is the dreaded factory reset. Go to your Settings menu and choose the Backup & Reset option.

Note: After the reset (when entering your Google ID) – do not sync the phone to your existing library. If you choose this option, you’ll have to start from the beginning and go through the reset again.

Step Two: Choose The Right Media Player

Since your reinvented phone will be all about media, you should probably forget about cellular connection and get used to it being a Wi-Fi only device. For online streaming you could try an app like Spotify and for offline listening – why not stick with Google Play Music, which also has a helpful cloud sync option.

You may go through the same selection process for your video files (YouTube being the obvious choice for online streaming and VLC a nice offline option).

Step Three: Upload The Media

Now comes the fun part. You can finally select the media content for your new “fun-only” Android. Music, videos, a few games (why not?) and maybe a few favourite apps. If you are worried about storage (your fun may be interrupted by the lack of space notification) – consider getting a bigger SD card or having a few of them handy.

Step Four: Complete The Transformation

To make your former phone a functional entertainment machine, you will surely need a good set of accessories: headphones, speakers and let’s throw in a cool protective case (so that your Android player can follow you anywhere you go) – and you are set for Step Five.

Step Five: Enjoy!

Now that your new media player is flowing over with exciting content, all that is left is choose the best way to sport your custom creation. You can plug your phone to the speakers for some party music, watch a movie while waiting in line or keep it ready for a long-haul flight. And the best thing is: your actual phone will be free to be what is was meant to be – an efficient communication device, not weighed down by excessive media.
