Language learning is one of the most exciting (personally speaking) and yet challenging undertakings. Your reasons for picking up a new language may be numerous: from an upcoming business trip to a genuine fascination with a particular country. Luckily, there is no shortage of resources for language learning these days and even your smartphone can host tons of valuable information, provided, of course, you have the right language learning applications installed.

DuoLingo

One of the most recognized app names in language learning is definitely DuoLingo.

Editor’s Choice Award winner at PC magazine, highly praised by the Wall Street Journal and named the App of The Year in 2013 by Apple, DuoLingo is a force to be reckoned with.

With DuoLingo you can learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Irish, Danish, and English and do so in a fun game-like manner. Lessons vary in difficulty as the app is tracking your progress and each one takes about 20 minutes to finish. Exercises come in different forms, from translation to speaking, and you have 3 lives to complete them or start all over. The gaming component makes the study process less study-like and adds an addictive feature to the mix.

Memrise

Memrise is another fun app for language learning with a crowdsourcing element. The best thing about the app is their signature way of remembering words or phrases, called “mem”. Mems are basically funny user-generated images or explanations to better remember various vocabulary forms. You can create mems yourself and “like” the ones offered by others. The idea is definitely fun, but does have a great effect on your retaining ability and you will see yourself remembering “memrised” phrases much faster.

The app also offers courses on geography, history, science, pop culture and more, in addition to language study.

LingQ

As someone who is a fan of learning through reading and watching, I am a big fan of LingQ, as it offers a natural and yet highly effective way to language apprehension.

In LingQ you get to read and listen to texts. Whenever you come across an unfamiliar word, you click on it and get the explanation. When you see this word again, it will be highlighted, hinting that you should probably know it. Once you feel that you got it, you can mark the word as “known” and it will not be highlighted anymore. LingQ is a great way to expand your vocabulary and keep it expanded.

The app is free, but not completely and you will have to pay for certain features, like listening to texts and marking more words. Multiple languages are available.

Anki

Anki (which is Japanese for “memorizing”) is a smart flashcard learning app with the focus on memorization, that’s been around for some time. It is classic and it is effective. And one of my personal favourites.

You enter words or phrases into the app and the related cards are generated. You can then flip though them at your convenience and decide how easy or difficult it was for you to remember a particular word and mark it accordingly. The easier it is, the longer the interval will be till you see it again.

You can use Anki to learn just about anything, from languages to math equations and next time you are stuck in a line or sitting in the waiting room, you will have something more useful to do than looking through Instagram updates.

Listen And Speak

Listen And Speak is an Android pronunciation practice app for a variety of languages (IOS version – How To Pronounce). Here you will focus on how to articulate words in a foreign language by listening to native speakers and then taking over the talking yourself. As the app is pronunciation-centred, you will practice with short patterns first moving on to more complex ones until your sounds are chiseled to perfection and your intonation is spot-on.
