You may already be familiar with the company Xiaomi, if not its definitely one to keep an eye on. Xiaomi is a fairly new Chinese electronics company and while its name means little rice its plans are anything but small.
They have seen record growth over the past year and are now so big that this past quarter Xiaomi overtook Samsung as the biggest seller of Smartphone’s in China. Xiaomi shipped about 15 million phones compared to Samsungs 13.2 million in the second quarter of 2014 which is not bad considering its only three and a half years old.
Of course their global sales and brand recognition isn’t close to Samsung’s, but to knock them out off the top position as leading vendor of phones in China, a position that Samsung has held for the last two and a half years, is a fairly impressive achievement and testament to the growth of this company.
While some analysts predict that Xiaomi could ship over 60 million phones in China this year it’s clear they also need to look further afield. Despite a fast growing following in its home country its yet to impress consumers outside of its borders despite its reputation for affordable, quality devices. This was underlined by only 1% of its total sales in 2013 being shipped outside of China. You can read more here.
