Losing a phone is everybody's worst nightmare.  It can either get stolen, fall out of your pocket while you were taking a bus ride or you might have carelessly misplaced it.

So, if you have lost your phone, the first thing you should be worried about is your private information stored there. If your phone lands in the hands of a wrong person, they can access your private data and misuse it.

Therefore, here are few smart ways to retrieve your phone as soon as you realize you have lost it.

What to do if you have lost your Android Phone?

Thanks to the Google feature built-in phone retrieval technology you can easily track down the location of your android phone. This technology works through your device account.

·         First get a spare mobile phone, maybe your friend’s phone.

·         Download the ‘’Find your device’’ from Playstore.

·         Log in with your gmail account credentials.

·        After you log in, you will be shown the location of your phone. You get three options – make a call to the phone, secure your device and wipe your phone.

In case someone has your phone you can call  it. This is the easiest way to get your phone.   If it’s not stolen, the person who may have your phone can answer the call. But make sure to pass no personal information other than a way to communicate with you.

·         If your phone is stolen or you can’t recover it, the best option would be to erase the phone data, in case it falls in the wrong hands. However, your lost device would need an internet connection and enough charge.

Besides, in Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google introduced Factory Reset Protection (FRP). It’s built to prevent thieves from being able to steal your phone, use it or sell it.

Android phones also work with other third party apps. These are few apps that you can try:

1.Where’s My Droid

The basic features of the Where's My Droid app allows you to ring your phone if you misplace it. The app can locate it using GPS on Google Maps, and employ a passcode to prevent unwanted changes to apps on your android phone. Moreover, there is a stealth mode that stops anyone who finds your phone from seeing your incoming texts. The person in possession of your phone will find the phone in a lost or stolen status.

The pro version of this app will let you wipe data from your phone by using a landline to access your phone, and lock the device.

2. Prey Anti Theft

The Prey Anti-Theft app lets you protect three different phones through a single download.

Once you have downloaded the app, there are a series of tutorials instructing on how to use your Prey Account to track your phone. The app is free and doesn't require any additional purchases.

Download the app on a spare phone. You will have the ability to sound an alarm from your missing phone, take screenshots if it's in use, and lock down the device the moment you realize it is missing.

3. Lost Android

Lost Android gives you remote access to your missing phone through the app’s website. The website will let you erase sensitive information if you fear that your phone might have been stolen. You can also send messages to your phone in hopes of someone finding and returning it to you.

Additionally, the app will let you record any calls or messages made or photos taken with your phone. Also, you can choose to remotely forward any calls you may be missing to another number.

How to track down a lost iPhone?

If you are an iPhone owner who lost his/her phone, Apple has a Find My iPhone feature to help you through. The app comes pre-installed on every iOS device and can display your missing phone on a roadmap to help you easily locate and manage it. You will require a computer or another iOS device with the Find My iPhone feature to locate your phone.

Follow these instructions to find your lost iPhone:

Sign in to iCloud.com, use the Find My app on      another Apple device.

·        Find your device: Open the Find My app or go to iCloud.com and click on find iPhone. Select a device to view its location on a map. If the device is nearby, you can have it play a sound to help you or someone nearby find it.

·         Mark as lost: This will remotely lock your device with a passcode and you can display a custom message with your phone number on your missing device's Lock screen. It will also keep track of your device's location.  If you added credit, debit, or prepaid cards to Apple Pay, the ability to make payments using Apple Pay on the device is suspended when you put your device in Lost Mode.

In case you lose your iPhone at house or work, you can find with the help of your AppleWatch (if you have one).

·         Connect the Apple Watch to the same network as your iPhone. The Apple Watch and iPhone must be connected via Bluetooth or to the same Wi-Fi network.

·         Bring up the Glances menu on your Apple Watch.

·         Tap on the ping button located below the Airplane Mode, Do Not Disturb and Silent Mode buttons.

·         After tapping on the ping button, your iPhone will give out a brief pinging sound to help you locate the device, even if your phone is on silent mode.

·         Tap and hold the ping button for your iPhone to flash its LED light. This can be helpful when trying to locate your iPhone in the dark.

These are the simplest methods to find your lost phone. However, always remember to be careful with it. Don’t carelessly misplace it anywhere you go because data thefts are rampant now. If they get your private information you can be a victim of identity and financial theft.

Just to be safe, wipe out any data from your phone in case some tech savvy individuals get hold of your phone.
