Internet running slow?Browser lagging?Poor internet connection can be a headache especially if your work or business relies on it. What’s worse is having to deal with customer support whenever your internet service provider doesn’t deliver you with the internet speed it promised. Often times, you don’t even need to call support to get faster internet. Sometimes the fault is where you position your Wifi router and other factors. Worry not! Here are a few things you can do to make sure you are getting the optimal speed you are paying for.

Wi-Fi

Placement

Distance and positioning of your WiFi’s router is key to getting the best signal for faster internet speed. According to Fahmida Rashid of pcmag.com,

“Not all rooms and spaces are created equal. The fact is, where you place the router can affect your wireless coverage. It may seem logical to have the router inside a cabinet and out of the way, or right by the window where the cable comes in, but that’s not always the case. A wired router can be tucked away, out of sight, out of mind. A wireless router, on the other hand, needs open spaces, away from walls and obstructions. It’s not just physical obstructions either; heavy-duty appliances or electronics running in close proximity can impact Wi-Fi performance.

If your router has external antennas, orient them vertically to bump up coverage. Elevate the router if you can. You can mount it on a wall, or put it on top of a shelf or a table to get a better signal.”

Updated Firmware

A slow internet connection can also be solved by simply updating your router’s firmware. Like your computer’s operating system, routers also have a software that is responsible for the overall function of your WiFi. Updating the firmware could give you the performance boost you need. Not only that, upon updating, your router is now up to speed with the latest security settings, updated features and even better performance speed.

Make it a point to check for updates and test speed on your router’s firmware. Not updating it can cause sluggish performance speed.

Update Old Hardware

If your router is a few years old then maybe there is a need to update its hardware such as the antenna. The antenna is what’s responsible for the signal strength of your WiFi. If you have an old and faulty antenna, chances are, your internet speed is affected. Also, it’s best to consider purchasing a new router if you think your current one is outdated. You can’t expect the fastest performance on an old system. Purchase a new router with an even higher bandwidth to ensure top internet speeds. Make it a point to update your operating system as well as your browser and make sure to clear the cache. Do the same for smartphones and tablets as well.
