There are plenty of uses to think of for your old phone, and we have covered a few of them in our post titled Reinvent Your Old Phone As A New Media Player. However, if you have a device with a particularly good sound system, you may want to try and assign it the role of a wireless speaker for our laptop or PC.

Your current phone can also play the part. If you feel like listening to the music on your computer in the other room, or just want to have a portable speaker at your disposal – this can all be arranged without acquiring any extra equipment. Just follow a few simple steps listed below and you will have that accomplished in no time.

The setup process is easy and quick and the only extra you will need to do is download an app. There are quite a few of them fit for the task, but we have selected SoundWire to get you started. Alternatively, you could use other apps, like AirFoil Speaker or WiFi Speaker to get this done.

SoundWire

First things first – you will need to make some downloads. Go ahead and download SoundWire for your PC or laptop and then do the same for your Android smartphone. Both apps should be easily available online and Google Play Store. SoundWire for Android is available as a free application, but you can also purchase the full version for $3.99. Apart from turning your phone into a wireless speaker, SoundWire can also make it into a baby monitor or a listening device – it all depends on what you are looking for.

Once both downloads are complete, run the apps simultaneously on your PC and smartphone. Make sure both your computer and phone are on the same WI-FI network, so that the two apps can automatically connect. Once they do, you should be notified of the progress.

On your computer, go to SoundWire and select the right audio source. Depending on the type of OS you are using, it may be “default multimedia device” (Windows 7/8),“stereo mix” or “what you hear” (XP) and others.Choose the appropriate audio source and click “OK”.

From here on now, everything is pretty straightforward. Just choose the soundtrack you want to play through your Android device. You can turn down the sound on your computer and controlling the volume on the phone can be done through SoundWire volume settings.

There you have it – your Android phone is now a wireless speaker.
