Pedal Power To Keep You Connected
Pedal Power machinery is a nice idea but generally it doesn’t produce enough power for you to run your house or even just your home lighting for very long. It won’t even save you much money as even one hour of cycling will only produce around 100 watt hours of electricity.
However, it’s just possible that we have been looking at this all wrong, while pedal power isn’t the solution it was once marketed as it can still provide a valuable boost to electric products. Think of those dynamo bike lights, they are ideally suited to pedal power as they use little electrical charge and take advantage of your activity. Well, with the Siva Atom, rather than just running a light from your pedal power you can now power your phone, music player or add extra charge to just about any device that’s powered through a USB port.
The Atom is easy to attach to your bike frame. Just remove the rear wheel, making sure to loosen the break, once removed you can place the Siva Atom over the wheel axle making sure to press the spoke drive firmly against the spokes. After replace the wheel and tighten the fastening nut.
Now once the wheels start turning the Atom will begin to generate power. This power can be stored in a detachable 1650mAh battery or alternatively you can run a USB cable up your frame and plug it directly into your smartphone, action camera, music player or bike lights to provide direct power while on the move.
With the Siva Atom you can now make the most of your pedal power to charge just about any device with a USB outlet. The Atom adds very little resistance to your bike and according to their website it is “akin to riding with your tires at 70 psi instead of 90 psi, or pedaling up a 0.3% grade” so it barely noticeable. At about 300 grams it weighs about the same as a juice box or banana so it’s not going to hold you back or upset the balance of your bike. It was designed so the battery pack can even be charged from a standard USB port letting you plug it into a wall socket or your computer.
Since featuring on Kickstarter last year it has gone to the market and is available for around $130 US. You can check out some other cool bike lights and gadgets available from Chinavasion at great wholesale prices.
