Smartphones in Space
Chinavasion is well known for being a great wholeseller of Android phones, and maybe, just maybe that influence has spread to NASA as they have decided to send smartphones into space to act as the brain for robots known as Spheres that well fly-freely inside the Space Station. The robots are quite limited so hence the need for a smartphone to act as the brain as well as to will equip the robots with more functionality.
These robots have been going through design and changes for several years and when they were first came on to the scene they were only capable of exact movements using small jets of CO2, which thrust the Spheres ahead at around one inch per second. The designers of the robots wanted to add so many more features such as communication, camera, accelerometers, sensors etc and while these geniuses were thinking they then notice the answer was in their pocket.
Astronauts first tested this method with simple smartphones and had them attached to the Spheres to offer more visual and sensing capabilities. Now NASA want to go a step further and under a the project name Tango, they hope to use 3D cameras embedded in Google’s latest smartphones to give the handset a human-scale understanding of space and motion. July the 11th is the date planned for this new project and if you want to get in on the action then you can choose a smartphone from Chinavasion’s mass range.
