New USB Power Delivery spec Announced – offers up to 100W power output
The new USB Power Delivery profile allows charging of laptops and other high power consumption devices, such as printers, monitors, HDDs. The aim of the USB promoter group is to completely eliminate the need for proprietary chargers and charging devices.
“USB Power Delivery enables a path to greatly reduce electronic waste by eliminating proprietary, platform-specific chargers” – said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman.
The USB 3.0 promoter group has defined five different power profiles which support power output 5V @ 2.0A; 12V @ 1.5/3/5A; and 20V @ 3/5A
