Shenzhen Bay Sports Center is the newest multi-use stadium in Shenzhen. It is situated in Nanshan District of Shenzhen, along the shoreline of Shenzhen Bay. The sports center and its surrounding buildings cover an area of around 320,000 square meters. The stadium, gymnasium and natatorium are blanketed by one huge steel ‘Net’ hemisphere. According to Baidu.com, the design is derived from silkworm Cocoon, which symbolizes the sports center as the birthplace of new world athlete champions. Hence, the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center is also known as “Chun Jian” (Spring Cocoon).
The stadium hosted the opening ceremony and some competitions of the 2011 Summer Universiade. Afterwards, it is open for public sports activities as well as hosting important sports competition and conventions for Shenzhen. It is now an architectural landmark and a popular tourist place in Shenzhen.
