Have you wondered what’s been happening on the internet lately? We here at Chinavasion have wondered the same thing and on taking a closer look we’ve found what with the perpetual Microsoft, Yahoo dance it was a week of search engine news.

“Search Engine News anyone?”

Will they, won’t they? That’s the question that most people are asking of Microsoft’s well-publicized bid to buy Yahoo. Time Magazine revealed recently that Microsoft hired lobbyist company Bryan Cave Strategies to help convince Yahoo bosses that the US$40 billion it was offering was indeed a good deal.

While analysts think the deal should go through you can’t be so certain with Yahoo executives making advances to everyone including Google.

Google appeared high up on the Digg page again last week when its vice president in charge of search quality, Udi Manber, talked to geek stalwart Popular Mechanics

He said that Google had altered its search algorithm 450 times in the last year. When asked what he thought about gaming and how easier sites were to find the only thing he said was that some sites were too vague and too hard to search. So it looks like its game on for all e-0commerce sites out there trying to improve their rankings.

While everything on the internet seems to be split between only a couple of search engines there is an increasing number of smaller, more targeted, players rising through the ranks. Technorati and Icerocket have always been good places to look for blog information but a number of others are on their way up too.

One, calling itself the alternative to algorithm-based search is Youlicit, a cross between a search engine and a social bookmarking site where the owners use end user recommendations to find sites. As it is reference-based it is a good place to check if you are using one site, or reading one blog and want to see what else there was like it. We typed in Chinavasion and found no equal listed on the site, which goes to show we provide a service no other company can.

Another search engine that had some of the people around the office was Songza, a streaming music search. Basically you type in the band or song you want to hear and instantly playable songs appear in the results section which can be played, purchased or added to your online jukebox.

Chinavasion sourcing staff did a little searching of their own last week while the Chinavasion marketing staff pressed the flesh at the Chinavasion booth.
