Cycling is a good for health, but sometimes it’s hard for people to bike up some steep hills. That’s why Trondheim, a hilly city in Norway was the first in the world with a lift specially designed for cyclists.

While the bicycle escalator is now being renovated and introduced to the world, it was created and installed in 1993 in Trondheim based on a prototype of a guy who grew tired of showing up to work hot and sweaty everyday after battling an uphill commute.

The 130 meter-long (427 ft) bike escalator has a maximum capacity of six cyclists per minute and speed of 2 m/s (4-5 mph). The distance between footplates is 20 meters (66 ft). Instead of towing you upto the ground level, the footplates simply push you forward with your right foot placing on it. And once you get to the top of the hill, you’re free to hop off and go.
