Flight has been one of them things that have always intrigued mankind. Birds besides chickens, ostriches, emus as well as big bird from Sesame Street and some insects have the ability to fly and we humans have felt left out. Many years we try to understand the technique of how to fly but it wasn’t until the Wright brothers that the first aircraft was designed and successful in taking off and flying. Since then a vast range of aircrafts have been designed and created. Over the years, especially the during early development there were some insane and crazy designs, with some not even making it off the drawing boards. Here is a look at some of the whacky however interesting concepts.

The above was known as a De Lackner HZ-1 Aerocycle flying platform, designed to carry one soldier to reconnaissance missions. During 1954 when this machine was created, the US was heavily involved in the Cold War against the USSR and everything was considered during the technology arms race. I can imagine these things were a bit pricey to be used for just one soldier.

This unique design as show above was developed in 1959 was the Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar. This piece of technology was a VTOL disk-shaped aircraft developed as part of a secret U.S. military project. I can imagine that those unsuspecting rednecks in the southern portion of Nevada might have been on to something when they saw this thing being tested over the desert.

The above is Russia’s attempt during the 1970s as they were trying to match the West, and they came up with this vertical take-off amphibious aircraft known as the Bartini Beriev VVA-14. The Soviets came up with some impressive and large aircraft and this was one of the unique ones.
