2009 Predictions, Part 3

Check out Part 1 and Part 2 of our 2009 predictions blog for a look at where we thought the economy would be for 2009 and what the developments would be around home gadgets.

Here at Chinavasion we thought we would take a look into the crystal ball and see what we could see.

Here are the final predictions we will make (for the next 12 months anyway):

Prediction#6 Cell Phones will continue to grow steadily in developing markets.

In the developed world there wasn’t too much going on in the cell phone world last year apart from big releases (the 3G iPhone and the HTC G1, the first phone with Google’s long-touted android OS)

This was perhaps reflected in sales with handset sales increasing by just 3% in Europe and the US last year.

It must almost be getting to the point where everyone in the western world has a mobile phone, really doesn’t want one, or is just going to the cell phones shop to get a replacement phone.

It’s quite a bit of a different story in developing nations though where cell phones are no where near as commonly seen. In China cell phones are one of the hot ticket items with no contract cell phones being the most popular.

Some unlocked phones put out by China cellphones wholesale suppliers could be the reason for the unlocked phones popularity. international phones like the Quad Band + Dual SIM Unlocked Cell Phone and Quad Band Touchscreen Media Cellphone offer people wordwide compatibility without the need to be tied to one specific carrier.

The popularity of the prepaid phone and the unlocked phone will continue through 2009 and in the foreseeable future.

Most customers wanting to buy unlocked cell phones are looking for phones that give them high degrees of freedom and networks don’t tend to have the data support and features that companies like AT&T and Orange do.

The GSM phone and GSM in general is likely to reign supreme as a result.

There will be a new level of importance being placed on the international phone as well, largely because of the wider market. The quad band phone and quad band telecommunication device will be an almost essential item for anybody looking for a cell phone wholesale company because they want to start a mobile phone business.

Tri Band Phones, like this Tri-Band Dual SIM Cellphone are also popular due to their wider range and lower price.

world phones don’t need to cost the earth… some like this Quad Band Dual SIM Cell Phone will even come in under the under US$100 mark.

Features like the cell phone camera, WAP and MMS will become increasingly common as the world moves from cellular technology 2.0 to cellular technology 3.0.

Prediction#7 Netbooks with 3G connection capabilities will become popular items.

It all started with the Asus Eeee. Suddenly there was a sub US$100 laptop available that you could take anywhere that would give you net access

ultra small computers like Sony’s Vaio P (reviewed by Engadget[engadget.com/2009/01/07/vaio-p-hands-on/]) are bringing the netbook to the public consciousness a great deal more in 2009

The launch of the computer wasn’t a revelation in itself… lesser known computer brands had been doing OEM work and putting out their own machines for a while.

And the connection methods most were using (through 3G GSM connections) had been done for a while by mobile professionals who had a cell phone and extra credits on their data plans to get rid of.

Now people have realized that notebook computers don’t have to come from a brand name supplier and they are actually seeking out cheaper models.

Tux (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux) and the rise of Linux might be responsible for the rise of the netbook.

As a result there is going to be an explosion of 3G netbooks this year. Especially since the rise of Linux has reduced dependency on punishment happy Microsoft.

Prediction#8 WiFi standard 802.11N will finally be released

While Wifi has been gaining popularity like nobody’s business the technology has been less quick to develop.

Manufacturers have been making devices to the G standard since 2003 and have been looking for an improvement.

Signs are good that 2009 will see the release of the WLAN 802.11N standard, with the standards group releasing and signing off on drafts all the way through last year.

Improvements people think the new standard will make include the end of interference from devices like microwaves and a wider reception from more aerials.

Prediction#9 We’ll start to see large capacity solid state drive computers

In 2007 and 2008 we saw prices for flash storage fall like the value of Motorola shares. The result…. lots of USB storage and external storage devices that could store the contents of your computer and have room for seconds selling at very reasonable prices.

There are now a number of solid state drives available for the inside of computers and prices for these, while high, are definitely coming down.

Toshiba recently lifted the bar by releasing a 512GB solid state drive. With no word on price yet it would be a fair guess that it wouldn’t leave too much room on your gold card.

But this year will still be the year that you see some laptops and netbooks emerge with SSD drives in the place of traditional hard drives.

Prediction#10 There will be an increasing acceptance for green gadgets and environmentally friendly electronics.

The electronic world will go even greener in 2009.

Wooden cell phones? Surely not… well according to Yanko Design (yankodesign.com/2007/04/12/s-series-sleek-sophisticated-mobile-phone-by-simon-enever/) the Nokia S-series is still in the concept page… but it is just a matter of time.

No we’re not talking about the occasional solar powered calculator or torch this will be a stronger shift towards things currently known as green gadgets.

There can be no doubts there have been leaps and bounds in solar technology with solar panels turning up on everything from bags to the windows of buildings.

solar powered gadgets can come in gadgets covering the spectrum from the Portable Solar Battery/Charger In Tough Clamshell Case that’ll charge a laptop to the Small LED Desk Lamp.

In fact a solar charger and solar battery for cell phones and smaller gadgets has gone from being a rarity to being rather common place and the number of devices that use solar power or solar energy to keep going has increased tenfold.

Solar lights are even turning up in gardens at Christmas now.

Gadgets powered by other forms of alternative energy, like dynamo-powered gadgets, and electronic appliances made with other materials, like the wooden cell phone and iPod re-encased in wood, are turning up.

People are looking for these devices too and you can bet that many solar lights and clean green gadgets will be appearing on many people’s wish list for at least the next year.
