Tethering – Why & How to?

Tethering refers to connecting one device to another. In the context of mobile phones or Internet tablets, tethering allows sharing the Internet connection of the phone or tablet with other devices. Connecting a Smartphone with other devices can be done over wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), over Bluetooth or by physical connection using a cable for example through USB.

On Android, systems tethering means sharing the internet connection via Bluetooth or USB. The function for sharing your internet connection through WiFi is called Portable WiFi Hotspot. The Hotspot function can be found under Settings > Wireless & networks > Tethering & Portable hotspot. On Apple devices, the tethering function is called Personal Hotspot. You can find it under Settings > General > Network menu.

Benefits of tethering

Stay connected! Tethering enables users to go online from their tablets, laptops or PDAs in situations where there’s no other means of Internet access: when there’s no wi-fi hotspot like a Starbucks around, or you are lost in the middle of nowhere and need an online map… I have to say, the easiest and best tethering mode is WiFi tethering. It turns your cellphone to a mobile WiFi hotspot. The phone connects to the internet via 3G and shares this connection through WiFi signal. For example it’s a great way to connect to the internet with a WiFi-only tablet.

Save money when choosing a tablet. 3G/4G tablets cost significantly more than WiFi tablets. Is it worth the high price if you can get the same 3G internet connection with tethering? Tablets with phone function are cool, but would you really make calls with a huge touchscreen tablet? Not so comfortable. In fact, some studies have shown that in 2011 up to 90 percent of all tablets sold in the United States relied on Wi-Fi, rather than on 3G or 4G LTE.

Save money on data plans. Use tethering to avoid additional costs of extra (shared) data plans. If you’re already paying for data service on your cellphone, you don’t need to waste money on an additional plan for your tablet.* Tethering can also save you money, since you won’t have to pay for additional hardware just to get your tablet connected.

Tethering provides better security for sensitive data. The information is being sent and received directly between the smartphone and the tablet. It’s much more secure than using a public hotspot.

*Some carriers block tethering and require monthly fee for unlocking. Generally speaking, even with that charge, tethering is a cheaper solution.
