So the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace has only been out a couple of days and already the villain is receiving his fair amount of slack. He’s not the only one that’s lacking in common sense, here’s three other Bond villains that could have done with a couple of spy surveillance gadgets and a healthy dose of common sense.(Part 2 of a 2 part blog)

“Let me see shall we use the exploding vat of acid or sharks with frickin lasers on their heads?” Bond villains might have been at the front of the cue when spy surveillance equipment was being handed out but they were not even in the cue when the common sense serum was being shared around.

So you’re the deceitful daughter of a British oil magnate, you’ve teamed up with a Soviet assassin of some note and you’ve captured the head of the British secret service. What do you do?

You leave her in a room unsupervised for a couple of hours of course, while you go and carry out your nefarious plans without any form of monitoring whatsoever. This is, of course before setting up a bomb which is supposed to kill her in several hours, which, of course, gives her plenty of time to get away.

If they couldn’t knock out MI6 with a disabled nuclear submarine what hope did they have with a simple bomb?

Unfortunately for Renard Bond had given M a GPS locator before she was captured. This allowed her to lead all of MI6 right to her cell.

Besides leaving the head of a secret agency alone without searching her for tracking devices (which you would expect said head to carry at all times) Renard made the mistake of not putting a GPS jammer in the cell.

What, do you think I should have tied her up?

Surely this would be standard issue for any place of incarceration designed to hold spies and secret agents. People whose very Modus operandi is carrying spy surveillance equipment, tiny gadgets to either communicate with people a long way away or at least let said people know where they are.

Some jammers like these could have saved Robert Carlyle a whole lot of trouble.

If Renard had installed and switched on said GPS jammer M’s last words would probably have been “Oh bugger, I think I’m …”
